How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a wrinkle relaxer formulated with botulinum toxin type A. This neuromodulator temporarily blocks chemical signals that tell your facial muscles when and how to move.
This relaxes the muscles and softens facial expressions, so skin doesn’t move or fold as much over the muscles when you smile, frown, or show other emotions. These dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles caused by expressions, fade.
By temporarily softening muscle movement, we can also prevent deep wrinkles from forming. Many clients choose preventative Botox to delay the visible signs of aging.
Those same muscle-relaxing effects that have made Botox famous as skincare also help it to address concerns like jaw pain, muscle spasms, or excessive sweating.

TMJ Disorder
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is a condition that affects the joints that assist jaw movement. The brain signals the jaw to clench, which can impair chewing and talking. TMJ disorders may cause damage to the surrounding structures, including the teeth, neck, and ears.
Clients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders experience:
- Jaw pain or tenderness, often near the ears
- Headaches
- Facial pain or soreness
- Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth
- Limited-to-no jaw movement
- Misaligned bite
- Bruxism (grinding or clenching the teeth)
- Ear pain, tinnitus, or a feeling of fullness in the ear
Injecting Botox into the temporomandibular joints relaxes these muscles, even if the brain is still telling them to contract. While the muscles retain necessary movement, they lose the ability to tense with full force.
Relaxing these muscles temporarily reduces symptoms of TMJ, subsides pain and inflammation, and protects the affected teeth, jaws, and muscles.
Dystonia
Dystonia is a medical condition that causes muscle spasticity—repetitive or involuntary muscle movements. In individuals with dystonia, the brain encourages subconscious muscle contractions that may be painful or jerky. Over time, this can lead to joint damage or muscle tension.
Common types of dystonia that affect the facial muscles include:
- Blepharospasm (uncontrolled eye twitching)

Botulinum toxin injections temporarily soften involuntary facial movements and prevent muscle strain, easing soreness and physical tension.
Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterized by excessive sweating, often without a clear trigger. While sweating helps regulate body temperature, overproduction can cause embarrassment, physical discomfort, and skin complications, such as inflammation and itching.
Instead of blocking the movement of a specific muscle group, Botox combats hyperhidrosis by targeting the sweat glands. The body naturally produces acetylcholine, a chemical that stimulates sweat production in the glands. Botox prevents the nervous system from releasing this chemical.
As a result, the sweat glands never receive the signal to produce sweat. This temporarily halts the excessive sweating in targeted areas without interfering with your body’s overall ability to regulate temperature.

Some patients prefer this treatment over traditional fillers because the effects do not last as long—3 to 4 months with Botox compared to 6 to 12 months with fillers.

Preparing for Botox Injections
Achieving optimal results from Botox in Kitty Hawk starts before your appointment. Healthy skin responds best to treatment—so we recommend clients follow our pre-treatment guidelines before receiving Botox for functional or aesthetic reasons.
- 2 Weeks Before: Avoid using harsh or exfoliating skin treatments before your appointment, as these can hinder the healing process. Use a gentle facial cleanser instead.
- 1 Week Before: Avoid excess sun exposure, sunburns, or tanning beds, as these damage the skin and prevent optimal results. Protect your skin by applying SPF 30+ sunscreen every 2 hours to block UV rays.
- 48 Hours Before: Avoid alcohol and tobacco products before your appointment, as these can increase the risk of swelling or bruising. Instead, drink plenty of water.
- On Appointment Day: Avoid applying makeup or other skincare products. Do not worry if your schedule does not allow this. Our team cleanses skin before beginning treatment.
We recommend eating a small snack or meal before your appointment and taking Tylenol to ease possible discomfort. Do not take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen or aspirin, which can increase the risk of bruising.
Recovering from Botox Injections
After receiving Botox near Kitty Hawk, you can expect some redness, tenderness, or swelling in the treatment area, which should subside within the following 24 hours.
Full benefits develop after 7 to 14 days and can last for 3 to 9 months, depending on the chosen neuromodulator formula, your metabolism, and your treatment situation.

We may incorporate Dysport into your treatment plan for its proven, FDA-cleared success in managing cervical dystonia and chronic muscle tension.
- Jeuveau: Designed exclusively for aesthetic purposes, Jeuveau offers a “clean” formulation of Botox with similar results. Jeuveau is not offered as a functional wellness injection.
